Elicit Their Inner Hero

Elicit Their Inner Hero

There are a lot of TV shows that are searches for talent.

One story we all seem to love is some unknown goof, just like you and me, who has some crazy skill.

They go on one of those talent search shows, belt out some opera song, and wow everybody.

And they go from zero to hero overnight.

Why are these stories so compelling?

Consider the stereotypical “hero’s journey.” Another situation where a normal goof suddenly is called to a great mission, and becomes the hero. Again, zero to hero.

Why are these so compelling?

Because all of us, deep inside, KNOW we are capable of achieving much more than we have. Doing much more than we’ve done.

And when we watch those TV shows or movies, we imagine it’s us that is the hero. It’s us that’s in that situation where we are being discovered or being pulled toward a hero’s journey.

If you could choose your own hero’s journey, what would it be?

Which demons would you slay? Which kingdoms would you save?

If you were to be discovered for one “talent” that would wow everybody, which talent would you choose?

Sometimes its tough to know what to do. Especially when we’ve got jobs that suck, bosses that suck worse, and just barely enough money to cover the rent every month.

If we could only make that one “Breakthrough” everything would be different, right?

Maybe, maybe not.

Consider that dream you have as your motivating engine. To keep going forward, no mater what.

To crush every obstacle in front of you. To get closer and closer to the defining creation of your life.

In reality, most people that are “discovered” have actually been practicing a certain skill for a long, long time.

What do you practice every day?

Which skills are you making better every day?

One of the most important skills is communication.

If you can effectively communicate your ideas to others, so they’ll not only be heard, but acted upon, you’ll do far better than most.

And the first step is to seek the dreams and desires of others FIRST, before presenting your own.

That way, instead of them helping you, it will be a team effort. A much stronger and longer lasting relationship. Be it a business partnership or a romantic relationship.

First expand THEIR hopes and dreams, to get them excited.

Then show them how YOURS and THEIRS overlap.

Then they’ll be no stopping you.

What is it about some movies that make you want to watch them over and over, yet other movies you only want to see once?

I’ve seen plenty of movies, and I’ve enjoyed plenty of movies.

But some movies, even though I’d rate them pretty high, I already know I don’t want to see them again.

But other movies, I enjoy watching them every couple years or so.

Same with books. There’s a few books I’ve read several times.

What’s the difference?

For me, at least, some stories are heavy on dramatic suspense. The story and characters draw you in, and you want to see what’s going to happen.

But once you know what’s going to happen, the enjoyment wears off on subsequent viewings.

Other movies don’t have that effect. Even though you KNOW what’s going to happen, you enjoy it anyway.

I think part of it has to do with the old Greek theory of “Catharsis.”

Meaning you get emotionally involved in the character, and vicariously solve your OWN emotions as the hero solves his or her problems.

Action packed movies don’t tend to have that.

But stories with strong character arcs do.

Because all us humans are continuously on our own character arc, we tend to “resonate” with those stories more.

We love to see the hero overcome their own inner demons, because as we watch them, we do so ourselves, if only a little bit.

This was the genius behind Milton Erickson.

He told stories, rather than simply talking about people about their problems.

He would match a story PERFECTLY with the person he was talking to.

And by following along, they would overcome their own problems.

That’s one way.

Which is great if you have access to a world famous hypnotist who solves people’s problems in one or two sessions.

But there is another way.

And that is to create your OWN hero’s journey in your mind.

Rehearse and practice mentally, overcoming those demons, and getting the prize.

Most people don’t like doing this.

They’d rather self-medicate themselves with hours and hours of brainless TV.

Not that there’s not good stuff on TV.

But when you make and watch YOUR OWN mental moves, they are necessarily going to be a PERFECT match to help you conquer your inner demons.

And believe me, we ALL have inner demons.

The whole character arc of life is to conquer inner AND outer demons. The more successful you get, the bigger the demons get.

You will NEVER face a demon you cannot destroy.

But you HAVE to face it.

With practice, it’s easy.

Mental exercise. Focus on what you want. Train your mind to expect to get it.

That way, you can more easily focus on what’s on the OTHER SIDE of that imaginary demon, that the demon itself.

I started watching this new TV show on Netflix last night.

It’s about a detective whose partner was recently killed.

But throughout the show, he’s talking to her like she’s still there.

He also has a few other demons that haunt him. Criminals he’s prosecuted.

They pop up and he has conversations with them as if they are real people.

Napoleon Hill did the same thing, only on purpose, and with a clear intention.

He created his own imaginary Mastermind Group.

Famous people from history that he’d conjure up in his living room once a week.

They would have brainstorming sessions.

Seriously.

Most of the time, on TV when you see somebody talking to an imaginary person, it means they are unbalanced. Crazy. Nuts.

But we ourselves do it all the time.

We give ourselves encouragement. We hold ourselves back. We’ve got all these voices that we’ve remembered from those adults that surrounded us as we grew up.

This is the source of the mythological devil on one shoulder, angel on the other.

It not only affects how we talk to ourselves, but how we speak to others.

If we think something is scary, and somebody else is talking about it like it’s no big deal, we rarely say something like,

“Hey that’s pretty cool, can you teach me how to do that?”

We sometimes say things that undercut them, throw doubt on them, if only to make US feel better.

Of course, none of this is intended to harm the other person. It’s only intended to protect our ego.

But what if there was a way we could use OUR angels to speak to THEIR angels.

Or talk to them to get THEIR angels to speak to OUR angels?

It’s kind of like the difference between talking to ghosts of murders, like in that TV show, and imaginary ghosts of famous people who are there to help.

If you choose BEFOREHAND what to talk about, instead of just blurting out a bunch of randomly chosen words designed primarily to protect your ego, you’ll get a lot better results.

Choosing the right intention is the first step. But even this is something most people don’t do. When you choose an intention, or an outcome that will benefit BOTH people, you’re already ahead of the game.

When you wrap that positive intention with powerful language patterns, you’ll become unbeatable.

Sure, you won’t be able to wander around blurting out the first thought that pops into your head.

You’ll actually have to think a little bit about what you say.

But the stuff you DO say will be WAY more effective.
